Joe Cox riding Duke's Bench?

What a change in Scenarios. Cox could have been sitting on Duke's Bench this weekend against Georgia Tech while he watched Thaddeus Lewis play marginally better than the current UGA quarterback ever will.

Auburn defensive coordinator Ted Roof has gameplanned this week for a Georgia offense led by a quarterback who at one time planned to play for Roof.

Joe Cox committed to Duke in May 2004 before Roof began his first full season as Blue Devils' coach. Cox's coach at Independence High School in Charlotte, Tom Knotts, had joined Roof's staff as quarterbacks coach after Cox won a North Carolina state title his junior season.
"He's a great competitor, did a great job of leading his team and was a winner," Roof said. "He went through several seasons there where his team didn't lose a game. I have a lot of respect for him."
A Georgia scholarship offer prompted Cox to back off his Duke commitment and switch to the Bulldogs two weeks later. He broke the news to Knotts.
"That was a tough situation," said Cox, whose father played for Duke.
Cox said he spoke to Roof mainly on a couple of visits to Durham.
"He was a great guy and a good coach," Cox said. "It's not one of those things where I know him well enough where it's going to be something weird between us."
Roof, who was dismissed at Duke after the 2007 season, took Cox's decommitment in stride.
"It's a business and you just want them to make the best decision for them based on what's important to them and you move forward," Roof said.
